Profile

The association of professional artists of the Magdalen Islands was founded in 1998 with the organization of a first symposium entitled “Mer océane”. In 2003, after having put together several one-time projects, the non-profit organization decided to create an artist-run centre within the archipelago with the primary mandate of supporting contemporary practices in the visual arts. Its main mission is to contribute to professional artistic development on a territory utterly unique by virtue of its geography and culture. With the collaboration of the Municipalité des Îles, the local development centre and the Fonds régional pour les arts et les lettres (Gaspésie-les Îles region), AdMare moved into its own space on March 2004. A large cottage by the sea, close to the village of Cap-aux-Meules, houses production and exhibition space, a work studio, and an apartment for artists-in-residence. Two consecutive CALQ grants have made it possible to establish a residency program. Selected artists are hosted by AdMare for a month, a creative period during which the landscape, sea air, the singing of the birds and the legendary hospitality of the locals serve as inspiration and lead to the completion of their projects. At the end of the residency, the work is exhibited for approximately 30 days after the opening. In general, AdMare’s program of activities consists of artist residencies, exhibitions, visual art workshops, artists’ gatherings and public talks on various artistic or cultural topics. The centre is open year round except for the months of December and January.
