For over 25 years the Artexte Information Centre has been a non-profit organization dedicated to the documentation, research and dissemination of information relative to contemporary visual arts. Artexte’s documentation centre collection distinguishes itself by a comprehensive archive of contemporary art exhibition catalogues published in Canada since 1965. A bibliographic database which constitutes the directory of this collection is accessible on site or via Internet. Its regular update enables users to easily find a summery of the information contained in over 18,000 documents on contemporary art.

The documentation centre also provides access to some 8,000 vertical files of which 5,500 are artists’ personal files. Artexte’s personnel is eager to facilitate research and can help users with their research needs. Longer-term research activities, supervised by research committees, are also undertaken by Artexte as is demonstrated by their publications, the organization of a colloquium, or the Public Art project. The Public Art project consists in the creation of a database of selected public art works, either permanent or ephemeral, produced since 1964 within the province of Quebec. Since the year 2000, Artexte has increased its interventions. It has supported two artists’ projects that made use of its collection.

t has also offered a first residency grant to a researcher. A second residency will take place over the spring of 2006. In addition to the 2004 colloquium, in 2005 Artexte invited a French organization for an information exchange on the particular modalities of specialized documentation in contemporary art. The common objective of these activities is above all to take a fresh look at the contents of the collection and to put it into perspective. These initiatives encourage new critical directions of reflection on the information that circulates around artistic practices. Document Submissions: Artexte receives publications relative to contemporary art as well as all documents published by visual art organizations about their activities at all times. Professional artists are invited to contact the information specialists about updating their personal files.
