Profile

Founded in 1992 by Claire Lemay and Johanne Proulx, Zocalo is an artist-run centre specializing in artistic enquiry, production and dissemination in the field of the print. The centre’s activities aim to bring traditional printing techniques up to date and to develop tools for digital image manipulation and printing. It enquires into the contribution of these techniques in a context in which contemporary artistic practice has become multidisciplinary and non-homogeneous. Our Young Artists project pays particular attention to the work of young artists who submit a project. Zocalo has also developed a skills acquisition program in digital image manipulation, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. Zocalo offers six residencies per year in digital image manipulation and printing. These vary in length from two to four weeks, according to the scale and complexity of the project. Each residency carries a stipend, printing materials, technical assistance and housing assistance. Zocalo seeks artists with innovative projects for limited-edition artists’ books. These books can be created as part of an artist’s residency. The studio provides facilities for production using traditional techniques such as relief engraving (woodcut, linocut, monotype, photopolymer) and depth engraving (collagraphy, ferric chloride etching, photogravure, carborundum). The digital image manipulation and printing studio provides artists with a Macintosh environment with four G4 computers and three printers of 13, 24 and 44 inches in width with a maximum length of 8 feet. We print on a variety of media. For video work, we have a G5 station for digital editing in Final Cut Pro HD. For animation we use Motion, for sound mixing we use Soundtrack, for creating DVDs we use DVD Studio Pro and for three-dimensional modelling we use Strata Studio Pro.
