Since 1998, the MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) has been presenting vibrant and engaging works of contemporary art. A venue sustaining professional, interdisciplinary art practices, a spawning ground for research and reflection, and a place for dialogue —the MAI’s primary mission is to support the creation and dissemination of intercultural art.
The MAI presents original works in a wide range of disciplines: dance, music, theatre, multidisciplinary arts, visual arts, and media arts. It is a meeting place where vital, lasting connections are made between varying sectors of the arts community, the cultural milieu, and diverse local communities.
The MAI is also a staging ground for research into new intercultural art practices, where the notion of interchange and exchange takes centre stage in the development of these new practices. To this end, the MAI offers residencies to artists and companies with the objective of creating professional, contemporary works of art; of developing collaborative projects, and, ultimately, of connecting with audiences.
These cross-cultural exchanges lead to an ever-evolving dialogue not only on intercultural relations, but also on the very essence of art and on the conditions that ensure its continued growth and self-renewal.
