The Darling Foundry's mission is to support the creation, production, and dissemination of visual art; it seeks at once to question the role of art and artists in the heart of the city, and to promote that role. By investing in 'in situ' projects within vacant or abandoned industrial buildings, the Darling Foundry attempts to explore our urban zones and to reach a diverse public, off of the beaten track of contemporary art. Although this approach contains inherent difficulties, the effect of daily exposure by the public to artists and their works can be profound and poetic. Seeing how artists interpret the world and how they perceive the spaces we enter each and every day can be life-changing.

An alternative complex implemented in a former industrial building in Old-Montreal and spreading over 3500m2, the Darling Foundry has developed over the years two poles dedicated to the visual arts.On one side, two exhibition spaces; the larger of the two has a distinct industrial cachet that lends itself well to solo exhibitions of ambitious installations and artists who wish to communicate with the vast space, the smaller of the two has a more conventional gallery aesthetic that allows artists to occupy the modest confines in their entirety. This dichotomy gives the public the opportunity to experience two different artistic approaches that juxtapose a myriad of periods and styles under the same roof. And on the other side, an assortment of artists’ studios, production workshops, and live-in ateliers. Ten artist studios are reserved for local visual artists working toward further professional development, while three live-in ateliers are offered to artists from the world over for three- to six-month residencies.

The Darling Foundry is also about in-situ installations and punctual events to liven up Griffintown. It is a working, meeting, and living space that acts as an artistic beacon in its neighborhood, its community and, thanks to its international residencies, around the world.
